Nashville cosmetic dentist Dr. Mckinnon Forbes is a leader in biomimetic dentistry. With biomimetic dentistry, Dr. Forbes can provide you with high-quality dental care that is durable, functional, and very attractive.

But what is biomimetic dentistry? Dr. Pascal Magne is a founding father of biomimetic dentistry, a type of dentistry focused on preserving natural teeth and preventing further damage. Here are some of the essential principles of the discipline to understand how biomimetic dentistry can help you.

Preserve Natural Tooth Structure

One of the essential principles of biomimetic dentistry is that we seek to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. In biomimetic dentistry, it’s understood that there are no restorations that are as durable and attractive as your natural tooth structure. When you have a cavity or tooth decay, we will only remove the decayed part of the tooth and restore it with material that closely mimics your natural tooth.

Let’s take a look at a root canal as an example. In traditional dentistry, a root canal removes the infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of your tooth with a drill. In drilling, much of the healthy tooth is removed along with the infected pulp. Traditional dentistry dictates that the next step is to fill the hole with a white or metal filling. Unfortunately, traditional white fillings tend to shrink, leaving room for bacteria to get under the filling and cause more decay. Metal fillings are no better. Metal fillings could cause your tooth to crack. A cracked tooth will bring you more pain as bacteria can penetrate the tooth, and eventually, the tooth will begin to decay again. With this traditional dentistry approach, you are no closer to a fixed tooth than when you came in the first time. In fact, with the second round of decay, you’ve lost more of your natural tooth than you did the first time around.

To treat tooth decay using biomimetic dentistry, your dentist will use advanced technology such as a dental laser or air abrasion wand to remove decay and bacteria from the tooth. With his approach, no extra, healthy tooth material is removed. Once the decay is extracted, your dentist will use strong bonding material that closely mimics your natural enamel (outermost layer of tooth) and dentin (second layer of tooth) to seal the tooth and prevent a resurgence of bacteria.

If these fillings were to fail, your teeth could still be repaired and preserved because no extra tooth material was removed or will be removed. Biomimetic dentistry reduces the number of root canals necessary and increases the likelihood that your teeth will last a lifetime.

Use Materials Similar to Natural Tooth Structure

To achieve the ideal of minimal invasiveness, using materials that function as closely to your natural tooth structure as possible is essential. Ceramic materials, like porcelain, are similar to your natural tooth. It is almost as durable as your enamel and flexible as the dentin within your tooth.

Another property of porcelain that makes it the best choice for tooth restoration is that it bonds directly to the natural tooth. Allowing the porcelain to pull the tooth together instead of pushing out as a metal filling would.

Biomimetic dentistry does not use materials like metal amalgam. Metal fillings are antithetical to the health of your teeth. It doesn’t function like natural tooth material and can contribute additional damage.

Achieve a Natural Appearance

Biomimetic literally means “imitation of life,” and that includes appearance. That’s why biomimetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry go hand in hand. The materials we use are similar to the appearance of your natural tooth material. That means that when we complete restorations, your mouth won’t look as if it’s full of repairs. It will look like it’s full of beautiful, healthy teeth — which it will be.

Porcelain looks like your natural teeth. If you’re tired of showing off your metal fillings when you talk, smile, or laugh, porcelain is the best choice. Unlike traditional white fillings, porcelain is resistant to staining. You still need to brush your teeth twice a day, floss and see your biomimetic dentist regularly, but it won’t be as hard to keep your restoration looking pearly white. Lastly, your natural teeth have a translucent quality; light shows through. Porcelain has the same effect. Allowing light to shine through makes your restoration look just like the rest of your teeth.

The new owner of Center For Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Mckinnon Forbes has done several procedures on me when was practicing in North Carolina and I must say that Dr. Forbes has greatly exceeded my expectations. I still travel to Nashville to his new office to see him. After having dental procedures by a variety of dentists in the past, I found Dr. Forbes to be extremely knowledgeable, gentle and explained my options in a manner that was understandable while not being pushy. Dr. Forbes has a great demeanor and chairside manner and I am exceedingly happy with the results of his work.

I had an amazing first experience at the Center for Advanced Dentistry. I felt prioritized, taken care of, and respected as a customer. For most people, the dentist is not their favorite place in the entire world, but they go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and taken care of!

If you have dental anxiety, this is for you! In April of last year, I had to have a molar extracted (from a different dentist) and the experience was quite horrible. I had already developed some dental anxiety prior to this, but this particular visit sent it through the roof. I knew I needed a new dentist and I wanted to find a holistic one who would align with my values and refer out to other practices as little as possible. I found Dr. Forbes at Center for Advanced Dentistry and scheduled a consult knowing I would eventually need an implant to replace my missing tooth. Crissy, their patient coordinator, spent almost three hours with me that first day! She was incredibly kind, great at helping educate me about the root causes of the issues going on in my mouth, patient answering all my questions, and so encouraging when I shared with her how much I struggled with anxiety when getting dental work done. Her passion for helping others in this field radiates through her and quickly helps build an immediate trust. We discussed several different options to best fit my timeline, budget, fears/anxiety, etc. I chose to have two additional teeth extracted (both were root canals that I had wanted out for years) and have implants placed in the, what would be three missing areas. At first, I had decided I wanted to be fully put under with anesthesia because I was so nervous about the procedure. But as we got closer, I started to wonder if I could do it without since it was so expensive, and overall not the healthiest option either. Dr. Forbes and Crissy encouraged me that I could do the procedure with alternative calming methods that they offer and that if at any point I felt like I couldn’t handle it, we could stop. Y’all, I don’t have the words to express the gratitude toward Dr. Forbes and the whole CAD office on surgery day. From their patience in waiting for me to be ready for them to start, to holding my hand and wiping away my tears. From Dr. Forbes communicating with me throughout the whole process, to pushing through seven hours with me in the chair to wrap up what I believe to be the best work anyone could have performed. I’m not even three days post-op and I can’t believe how little pain I’ve felt. I will never trust another dentist like I do Dr. Forbes and I can honestly say I’m less fearful now for future procedures. I look forward to the future dental work and corrections I’ve needed for such a long time! I never thought that would be possible. Thank you, Center for Advanced Dentistry!

They deserve a 10 out of 10 from this patient!!! AHH-MAZING! We had a life changing experience for our household. When you have dental anxiety and past horrible experiences with dental healthcare providers, when you get HERE at Center for Advanced Dentistry, you will be able to exhale. You will be able to look forward to your next visit. You will finally be understood. The team took the time to understand this patient as a person with real emotions and feelings so that they could tailor a treatment plan and approach that will RIGHT the path of oral health. From understanding diet and oral hygiene practices, offering suggestions and products to build oral health from the inside to recommendations for follow-up myo therapy to their own treatment during the visit, this is a full service office who understands the body inside and out and the goal is total health, not just getting through an appointment time and neglecting overall health advice for the patient to create TRUE health. Thank you, team, for an amazing experience even from the first call to us walking out the door. This is the place for us!

I was extremely hesitant to try yet another dentist. I needed to get another opinion for my own peace of mind though, so I gave CFAD a try. I had seen multiple friends post about them and from the look of their website and social media they looked like they aligned well with my holistic approach to health in general. Backstory: I have had a handful of dental emergencies as an adult, that always led to tooth removal. They were at traditional dentist offices that seemed to want the quick fix to everything. I believe my teeth probably could have been saved if I had known more about preventative oral health and the holistic mindset around teeth in general back then. Most dentists (at least the many that I have seen) do not educate you on full body functional health. They focus on service level in my opinion. I needed more than this. I was tired of not understanding. So I learned more about holistic options. I have a lot of anxiety seeing dentists because every visit for over a decade was always bad news. I need my bite corrected, a few implants, and some small fires to be put out. I don't need a celebrity smile like other doctors have pushed, and I very much like my smile how it is. What I need is better function of my overall health. I didn't want braces at 33 and the suggested gameplan from another doctor was many years of work. Going into CFAD today, I felt this huge weight and confusion over me. I was nervous and defeated, but I walked out empowered and confident! My consultation was more like having coffee with a friend. Crissy immediately helped my nerves dissipate with her personality and gentle demeanor. We talked for hours. The wealth of knowledge that was poured into me was exactly what I was searching for. She was very likeminded about health in general and made me feel safe to ask questions. She eased into the plan for my mouth and I never felt like she was rushing or waiting to move on to the next topic. I could have talked to her all day. She really made me completely comfortable before I even saw Dr. Forbes. So by the time he came in, I had zero anxiety. That alone is a miracle in itself, because it's never happened before. The plan for my mouth is different than I expected, but I am so excited for their expertise to be a success story for me. I actually understand the plan and why. Another first! I don't need to get braces, and it actually won't take much time at all to bring functionality back into my mouth. If you are on the fence about big dental work, I highly suggest meeting with Center for Advanced Dentistry for a consultation. I can't wait to start improving and healing my mouth with this amazing team.
